  • ADHD Students and Classroom Considerations
    The culture of the classroom can either support or create barriers to student success (Piffner,2011).    Factors that foster attention, positive behavior, and academic and social success includeestablishing positive relationships with students, adopting classroom management techniques,and creating a physical arrangement that facilitates learning. It is often a positive relationship with one teacher that facilitates school success for a studentwith ADHD (Piffner, 2011).    When teachers connect with students and appreciate their unique skills and interests, students are more likely to strive for achievement and positively respond to classroom rules and procedures. When using a proactive approach to classroom management, teachers support all students andcreate conditions that prepare them for learning (Piffner, 2011).    Some strategies for positive management include clear directions, meaningful feedback, and opportunities for collaboration with peers. Here are some others.

    AAP Public Dialogue Series-"COVID-19 Pandemic: Responses & lessons learned from African universities
    As nations continue to come to terms with coping and finding solutions to the challenges that have beset them with the onslaught of COVID-19, the Alliance for African Partnership has established a public dialogue series with speakers including the Vice Chancellors, researchers and other relevant staff at AAP consortium universities, as well as representatives of the public and private sector, funding partners, think tanks, and NGOs, among others. Partnering with the MSU African Studies Center, the Tanzania Partnership Program, and University World News - Africa, the AAP will host a series of six virtual dialogues throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic covering a variety of topics and themes. All are welcomed to attend these virtual webinars and submit questions for featured panelists.

    Rotary International is one example of such a group. Paul Harris formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities. Groups such as Rotary can be ideal business networking groups for those who enjoy mixing service to their community with networking.

    1) Local business groups - Most cities and towns everywhere have local business groups that meet on a regular basis. In North America the largest business group is the Chamber of Commerce. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1912 and the Canadian CoC soon afterwards, in 1925. According to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce website, the CoC's primary mandate is to "advocate for public policies that will foster a strong, competitive economic environment that benefits businesses, communities and families".

    Cloud Hardware
    The primo example of a device that is completely cloud-centric is the Chromebook. These laptops have just enough local storage and power to run Chrome OS, which essentially turns the Google Chrome web browser into an operating system. With a Chromebook, almost everything you do is online: apps, media, and storage are all in the cloud. Because of that, they tend to be inexpensive and that's made them incredibly popular for education. The latest, made since 2017, will even run Android apps.

  • Selective breeding in aquaculture
    Selective breeding in aquaculture holds high potential for the genetic improvement of fish and shellfish. Unlike terrestrial livestock, the potential benefits of selective breeding in aquaculture were not realized until recently. This is because high mortality led to the selection of only a few broodstock, causing inbreeding depression, which then forced the use of wild broodstock. This was evident in selective breeding programs for growth rate, which resulted in slow growth and high mortality.[17] Control of the reproduction cycle was one of the main reasons as it is a requisite for selective breeding programs. Artificial reproduction was not achieved because of the difficulties in hatching or feeding some farmed species such as eel and yellowtail farming.[18] A suspected reason associated with the late realisation of success in selective breeding programs in aquaculture was the education of the concerned people – researchers, advisory personnel and fish farmers. The education of fish biologists paid less attention to quantitative genetics and breeding plans.[19]

    How ADHD Affects School Performance
    Primer text from the U.S. Department of Education.
    The school experience can be challenging for students with ADHD.
    Students usually are identified only after consistently demonstrating a failure to understand or follow rules or to complete required tasks.
    Other common reasons for referral include frequent classroom disruptions and poor academic performance.
    Studies found that students with ADHD, compared to students without ADHD, had persistent academic difficulties that resulted in the following: lower average marks, more failed grades, more expulsions, increased dropout rates, and a lower rate of college undergraduate completion (Weiss & Hechtman as cited in Johnston, 2002; Ingersoll, 1988).
    The disruptive behavior sometimes associated with the disorder may make students with ADHD more susceptible to suspensions and expulsions.

    ADHD is one of the most commonly diagnosed conditions of children (Centers for Disease
    Control and Prevention, 2015).

    In a 2016 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, scientists found that 6.1 million children aged 2-17 years living in the U.S. had been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is similar to previous estimates.

    Ages 2-5: Approximately 388,000 children
    Ages 6-11: Approximately 2.4 million children
    Ages 12-17: Approximately 3.3 million children

    The diagnostic term attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) refers to individuals who display patterns of inattention, impulsivity, and overactive behavior that interfere with daily functioning (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013).

    Behavior Management Strategies and ADHD students
    The goal of behavior management strategies is to help students learn to manage their own
    behavior. The following strategies are most effective when used in conjunction with evidence based instructional strategies.


    Prevention Strategies
    Here are some preventive measures that support students in demonstrating positive
    behavior.


    Nonverbal Supports: Together with the student, develop inconspicuous,
    nonverbal messages such as eye contact, hand gestures, or other signals that teach
    students to recognize the conditions that trigger specific behaviors. Once the
    system is developed, students can learn to manage their behavioral responses
    before they occur.
